Trail Leaders Course
Learn the basics of wilderness trip leading with a focus on youth development from the people who’ve been doing it for nearly 100 years. The Camp Manito-wish Trail Leaders Course takes new trip leaders backpacking in the Porcupine Mountains or canoeing in the Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest for four nights. Our experienced trainers help you develop the technical skills and practice the group leadership necessary to successfully lead a backcountry trip. Canoe Building Workshop
Learn the art of the "Woodstrip/epoxy construction method" of building canoes. All phases of building a 15' Ranger Prospector Canoe will be covered and experienced in a seven day course at Camp Manito-wish YMCA in Boulder Junction, WI. All required materials and tools will be provided. Woodworking skills are helpful but not necessary. At the end of the seven days, two canoes will be completed and ready for transportation. Because of the seven day time constraint, only two canoes will be available to students. Consult the tuition schedule to determine the cost of the course with or without a canoe.
The class will be limited to four students to insure maximum hands-on personal instruction.
Parker Sterner, has combined his longtime interests in paddling, woodworking and wooden boats resulting in the building of more than 20 boats over recent years. He has found it gratifying to begin a project with a stack of lumber and using a minimum of hand tools, turn out a variety of canoes, SUP's, pulling boats and skiffs that are both a pleasure to use and satisfying to just look at! Over the past 12 years his experience with boat building has allowed him to work through many of the pitfalls resulting in the opportunity for others to construct a boat with a minimum of obstacles producing functional and paddle-worthy art.
